Mayse Braga:

"Good deeds will put an end to spiritual obsessions"

The writer and public speaker from Brasilia talks about depression, obsession and other issues that concern so many people in our times

Mayse Braga de Oliveira (photo) was born in Rio de Janeiro and became a Spiritist aged 14. She has lived in Brasilia for decades. She is a well-known public speaker, taking the Spiritist message to people in different Spiritist Centres across the country. She also the author of three books. She has shared with us some of her thoughts on

current issues:

Thousands, or millions of people around the world suffer from depression. What are the causes?

In most cases, depression is caused by a lack of self-knowledge and the lack of work on good causes.

What is the best treatment?

Inevitably to become less self-centred and help others, no matter who, with lots of love.

How to proceed to avoid dragging people around you down with your daily troubles and routine?

We should believe that the dreams are built, indeed, bit by bit, every single day.

What is the best way to improve our self-esteem?

I believe it is self-knowledge and to renew our emotions.

Are spiritual obsessions the result of our acts and thoughts -- the lack of vigilance -- or inevitable karmic consequences?

Nothing is inevitable in life! Good deeds will put an end to spiritual obsessions.

How can Spiritism help reduce the number of suicides in Brazil and other countries?

By encouraging everyone to embrace a new life, one of solidarity and real love to everyone and everything.

What should we do to find our real place in this world?

To find our balance and the courage to change!

In the new world of Regeneration, do you believe there will be a new opportunity for infantile or ignorant souls if they have good faith and good principles?

There won't be exile for the meek, that is for sure. Nor for those who are peaceful or are determined to change.

What is the best way of addressing the natural clashes between the principles of Spiritism and the world we live in?

I believe it is to disseminate Spiritism, to avoid shying away from the matters of this world and to live our truth in a coherent manner.

Is there room for religious practice in the principles of Spiritism?

The practice of real charity is, in fact, the great pillar of Spiritism.

Which of the main principles of Spiritism touches peoples' hearts in a special and deep way?

It is finding out for sure that we will be able to start again, always.

Is forgiving really difficult?

It is difficult because it means forgetting.

What is the best recipe for forgiving?

To forget altogether, to begin a new relationship with those who hurt us one day.

What human behaviours trigger anxiety?

Thinking too much about ourselves, moving away from the opportunities to help other people.

Jesus is the Divine Conductor of humankind. What is the best time in our lives to understand that?

Some times, it is when we suffer, some times it is by reasoning and learning, but always when we love one another.

Tell us about your work in the dissemination of the Gospel of Jesus in the light of Spiritism?

I am a public speaker, addressing groups of people, talking to them about facts that happen in their daily lives and showing them how the knowledge of Spiritims can help everyone.

Thanks for this interview. Please share with us your final thoughts.

I will quote Auta de Souza, who wrote through the medium, Chico Xavier: "Even when you're disillusioned, exhausted and honest soul, as much as life is painful, do not give up: Wait!..." Thank you for the opportunity.
