Is there life in other worlds?

The plurality of inhabited worlds, as we know, is one of the fundamental principles of Spiritism. It is not a particular view expressed by this or that Spirit, but a doctrinal principle that, as such, it has met the criterion of universal agreement, clearly defined by Allan Kardec in two of his major works, as we shall see:

The agreement with the Spirits teachings is therefore the best evidence. It is important, however, that it takes under certain conditions. The weakest of all occurs when a medium, alone, asks many spirits about a doubtful point. Clearly, if the medium is under the rule of obsession, or dealing with a mystifying Spirit, it can say the same thing under different names. Nor any guarantee there will be enough in accordance to present what it could be achieved by various mediums in the same center, because they can all be under the same influence.

One serious guarantee exists for the teaching of spirits: the agreement there is among the revelations they do spontaneously, making use of many strange mediums to each other and in various places. (The Gospel According to Spiritism, Introduction - II – Doctrine Authority - Universal Control of the teachings of the Spirits)

The best guarantee that a principle is the expression of the truth is to be taught and revealed by different spirits, with the assistance of various mediums, strangers to one another and in various places, and be at rest, confirmed by reason and sanctioned by the accession of the greatest number. (The Mediums' Book, Chapter XXXI - Spirits Dissertations - item XXVIII - Note)

Readers of this magazine have questioned whether the above understanding applies to information that has, over the years, published in some spirits books about life in Mars.

We have answered negatively to this question, because we understand that the information about the conditions of life in Mars do not meet the criteria of the agreement that guides the spiritual doctrine, although we do not doubt that the principle of the plurality of inhabited worlds also applies to Mars, as any other planet.

There are three references about Mars in Allan Kardec’s work, all with the same sense. Here they are:

According to the spirits of all the worlds that make up our planetary system, Earth is to the least developed people, physically and morally. Mars would still be below it, and Jupiter would be the superior of lots, in every respect. (The Spirits' Book, question 188, Note 1

According to the spirits, the planet Mars would be even less advanced than the Earth; the spirits who are incarnated there would seem to belong almost exclusively to the ninth grade, to the impure Spirits, so that the first frame, we have said before, would be the image of this world. Several other small globes are, with some nuances, in the same category. The Earth would come next; the majority of its population belongs unquestionably to all classes of the third order, and the smaller part to the last classes of the second order. (Spirit Magazine, March 1858, Kardec’s article: "Jupiter and some other worlds")

Mars is an inferior planet than Earth which is a rough sketch...

(...) Mars is the first incarnation of the grossest demons; the beings that inhabit it are rudimentary; they have the human form, but no beauty; they have all the instincts of man without the ennobling of kindness. Delivered to material needs, they drink, eat, fight, and unite carnally.

(...) On this planet the land is arid; little greenery; a dark foliage that spring does not rejuvenate; a day like and gray; the sun, only apparent, never lavishes its parties; time flows monotonous, without alternatives and hopes of new stations; there is no winter, there is no summer. The day shorter, is not measured in the same manner; night reigns longer. No industry, no inventions, the inhabitants of Mars spend their lives to conquer their food. Their grossing houses, low as a den of beasts, are repellent by neglect and disorder that reign there.

(...) They are not cannibals; their continuous battles have the intention to ownership land more or less abundant for hunting. They hunt in endless plains. They are restless and mobile as beings devoid of intelligence, moving constantly. Equal its seasons, everywhere the same, consequently it behaves the same needs and the same occupations; there is little difference between the inhabitants of one hemisphere to another. (Spirit Magazine, October 1860, "Mars," Georges’ message, by Costel lady)

The above information is entirely opposed to those Chico Xavier received from different spirits - Maria João de Deus, Humberto de Campos, Emmanuel and Abel Gomes - as it mentioned by the confrere Gerson Simões Monteiro in the article entitled "Emmanuel and Abel Gomes speak of humankind in Mars and Saturn", published in this magazine edition 372 - http://www.oconsolador.com.br/ano8/372/especial.html / Regarding such messages is good, however, the reader also reads the article “There even life beyond Earth?" by Ricardo Baesso de Oliveira, published in this magazine 345 - http://www.oconsolador.com.br/ano7/345/especial.html  /.

Now, the non-concordance of information about the same topic excludes, necessarily, the criteria that defines what integrate or not integrate the body of doctrine of Spiritism, which is why we think it is good form to leave the astronomical science the role of it in unveiling of the secrets surrounding the life in different planetary systems, which, for lack of evidence, plus the absence of agreement, escapes from the doctrine that we endorse.
