Jesus's Help

Fabio felt discouraged about his life. Nothing worked for him. He wanted to study but could not find the will to enrol in a course that would teach him to work in any occupation. Despite that desire, he lived without courage to seek help, letting the days pass by without taking any action.

On one occasion his mother, broom in hand, watched him as he was silent, lost in thought. Full of compassion she asked:

- Honey, what is happening to you? You are always silent, discouraged, not daring to do something to change your life. You are young, you have good health, intelligence, but you do not use anything that God gave you.

The boy sighed discouraged and, with tears in his eyes, replied:

- Oh, Mom! If you knew how I suffer! I need

to work but I can’t! Nobody gives me a job, not even a simple one! How can I change this situation?

His mother nodded, then sat down beside him and considered:

- You need to change your attitude, Fabio. If you really want to work, you cannot expect that a job will come knock on our door. You do have to look for work!

- But I have no motivation, Mom - he said, justifying himself.

- So change that. In life everything depends on ourselves. What do you think of when you are silent?

- Nothing.

- Why don’t you look for something to do? Here at home I have work all day! Do something good and useful! Start by sweeping the leaves that fell from the trees in the yard, for example. I would be very grateful to you!

- I do not like to do that kind of job, Mom. I want a real job!

- And what do you consider "a real job"? - his mother replied.

- A job in an office, a shop, a garage, a bank...

Full of compassion for her son's cluelessness, the mother asked:

- And do you think that in an office, in the absence of someone, you would not have to sweep the floor? In a garage you would not have to wash the car parts? In a shop, you would not have to use your head to sell products?

- I know, Mom. But when I get the job, I will do it all!

His mother thought for a moment and answered truthfully:

- The truth, Fabio, is that you do not use any of the treasures that God has given you. You always have unoccupied mind, you do not like to study, you do not use your hands except to dress yourself, eat and drink; you do not seize your time and are always pessimistic. Do you think that you will change suddenly?… Honey, you are self-indulgent: you expect everything to fall on your lap without any effort.

- How horrible, mom! Is that really what you think of me?

- That's what you show me and everybody, dear.

The boy hung his head and began to cry. His kind mother got closer to him, hugged him fondly and said:

- Sweetheart, to achieve what you want, you need to strive, to look for a job. No one will come here to our house to offer you some work!

As he kept his head down, his mother continued:

- Also, you do not have the habit of prayer, Fabio.

And picking up a book, she opened it on a specific page and ordered:

- Read!

Fabio took the book and looked at its title: The Gospel According to Spiritism. Then he began to read:

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you shall find; knock and the door will be opened for you; For he who asks receives, and he who seeks finds and to him who knock on a door, it will be opened. "

Interested, he continued reading:

"What man among you, would give a stone to his son who asks for bread? Or if he asks for a fish, would give him a serpent? Well, if you, being evil as you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, is it not logical that, with stronger reason, your Father in heaven will give the real gifts to those who ask Him? "[1]

After reading, Fabio had his eyes filled with tears. Then he turned to his mother:

- This means that, if I ask Him, God will give me what I want?

- Yes, honey. But asking is not enough. You have to look for it until you find what you want. And knock on the door, which means making an effort to achieve what we want. Got it?

Fabio showed her that he had understood and more excited, said:

- Now I understand the value of prayer, Mom. But also the value of seeking what we want and seeking a way to find it.

From that day on, Fabio would rise early, help his mother with the house chores, then go out to study at a quick course in office practice. He soon finished the course and finally applied for a place at several offices.

After a few days he got what he wanted and did his activities so well and showed himself so ready to help others that he was chosen to be the employee who would teach the course for beginners.

And whenever a new course was started, he would open the Gospel on that page, read the text to the students and then begin telling his

own story and how he had managed to succeed, with the help of Jesus.
