Envy

Jonah and Abel were neighbours and great friends who always played together.

Jonah was detached from material things and did not mind when Abel wanted to play with his toys. However Abel, who was very selfish, did not like when Jonah played with any of his toys, which he was jealous of.

It so happened that on his birthday, Jonah got a beautiful toy: a little truck that, when switched on, had its lights blinking as it moved on the floor.

Envious, Abel said nothing but had his heart bursting with anger. He wanted to have a toy like that! But it was all for Jonah!

He closed his eyes and mulled over his jealousy. Whenever he saw the little truck, he wanted to play with it and Jonah would allow it without problems.

Until one day, full of envy, Abel seized the opportunity that Jonah was not around because he had gone answer a call from his mother, and as he had been left alone in the room, taken by a bad impulse, Abel pulled a wire from the truck which made it stop working.

Then, frightened by what he had done, he went away to his house.

But good-heartedly Jonah had talked to his mother and told her what he wanted to do:

- Mom, Abel likes my truck with flashing lights so much! I think I'll give it to him.

- It's up to you, my dear! If you are not going to miss the toy... - said the mother.

- I like Abel, Mom, and I feel that he looks at that truck in a different way. He doesn't get many gifts! I want to see the joy on his face when he gets it.

The mother embraced her son with affection, and said:

- You are a boy who is worth his weight in gold, Jonah. It's hard to see a kid your age be so selfless as to give a friend a birthday gift he's got!

- It's just that I really like Abel, Mom.

- Do what your heart tells you, son. For me, it's okay.

So when Abel came back the next day to play, Jonah hugged him and said:

- Abel, I noticed that you're very fond of my new truck. I decided to give it to you as a gift!

His friend's eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. And Jonah, holding the toy in his hands, gave it to Abel:

- Now it is yours, Abel!

The other stammered, not knowing what to say:

- But... but... It's the newest toy you have, Jonah!...

Embracing his friend, Jonah replied cheerfully:

- I know, Abel. But I think you like it more than me. So now it is all yours!

Abel, sorry for what he had done, noticed that Jonah did not know the state of the toy, and said:

- But it is broken, Jonah...

Surprised, Jonah looked at his friend and at the truck:

- No! Just yesterday I played with it! It's in perfect condition.

But having a closer look at the toy, he noticed that it did not flash its lights brightly anymore. Then, turning to Abel, he asked:

- What happened to it?

Abel did not have the guts tell him and hung his head full of shame.

At that moment, Jonah realized that his friend had broken his little truck because of envy. Full of pity for him, he said:

- Do not worry, Abel. My dad likes to fix toys. Rest assured, it will soon be flashing its lights again!

Feeling remorse for what he had done, Abel shouted:

- Don't you understand that it was me who broke your truck? I've always been envious of you, Jonah. I'm sorry, believe me. Forgive me! - and he began to cry.

Jonah hugged him and said:

- I really like you, Abel. I'm sure you will not do that anymore, right?

- Never again! Do you still want to be my friend, Jonah?

- Of course I do! Let's play?

- You are a very special friend, Jonah. Thank you!

And when Jonah's mother entered the room to tell them that their snack was ready, she found the two friends playing and laughing on the floor,

happily.
