Text for reading

10. Many miracles and cures are obtained by the disciples - the disciples who were scattered went from place to place preaching the Gospel. It was thus that Philip went down to a city of Samaria, where he proclaimed the Christ and made many wonders that the people considered miracles: unclean spirits came out of many possessed people, turned to walk lame, lame were healed. (NR: In a note placed by Basil Blackwell in his edition of the New Testament, it is said that Philip was not one of the twelve apostles, but one of seven assistants chosen by the disciples, soon after Stephen mentioned in the list of Chapter 6, verse 5, the book of Acts.) (Acts 8:4 to 8:7.)

11. Simon the sorcerer, offering money in exchange for the gift revealed by Peter and John - There was a sorcerer in Samaria professional, named Simon, who, seeing the cures promoted by Philip, was thrilled and was even baptized. When Peter and John laid their hands on some Samaritans and they received the Holy Spirit, the sorcerer offered money to the apostles, saying: "Give me this power to me also, that they receive the Holy Spirit on the people whom I lay hands ". Peter replied, "That thou art condemned you with your money because you found you could buy the gift of God with money! No way you'll have a party to that power, because your heart is not well-meaning before God. Change your mind about this evil and asks the Lord to forgive. He may forgive the thought that fed them in yourself. I see that you are full of jealousy bitter as gall, and imprisoned in the bonds of wickedness." Simon, sorry about what he had said, begged him: "Ask the Lord for me, that does not happen to me than anything you have just said." (Editor's note: This offering unseemly Simon originated the word simony.) (Acts 8:9 to 8:13, 8:17 to 8:25.)

12. Philip baptizes an Ethiopian official - In obedience to an angel of the Lord, who advised him to go toward the south, the road going from Jerusalem to Gaza, Philip departed immediately. On his way he met a senior Ethiopian official, the court of Candace, queen of Ethiopia, which had given him custody of all its treasures. Having gone to Jerusalem to pray at the temple, the man reading Isaiah the prophet was returning, sitting in his carriage. A Spirit told Philip to approach the coach. Realizing that the officer was reading the prophet Isaiah, Philip asked: "Did you understand what you read?" The man replied: "How can I understand without someone explain to me?" The passage of Scripture which he read was this: As a sheep was taken to be killed, and as a lamb before the shearer is dumb, he opens his mouth. He was humiliated because he was denied justice. Who can enumerate their offspring? Because life is about to be taken from the earth. The eunuch asked Philip, "Please, who is referred to the prophet in this passage? To himself or another? "Philip explained the lesson and, based on this text of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. Further ahead, finding water on the way, the eunuch asked to be baptized and Philip met him. Once out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that was no longer seen by the Ethiopian official. Philip arrived in the town of nitrogen and from there went on to Caesarea, where he stopped announcing the good news. (Acts, 8:26 to 8:40.)

13. Saul is advised to follow to Tarsus, his hometown - after the events in Damascus, who regained vision with the help of Ananias, Saul came to Jerusalem and sought to join the Lord's disciples. But all were afraid of him and did not believe he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and introduced him to the apostles, telling them how, during the trip, he had seen and heard the Lord and the preaching done by him in Damascus, where he talked openly in the name of Jesus. Since then, Saul stayed with them in Jerusalem and walked freely everywhere, openly preaching the Lord's name. Since the Jews had conspired against his life, his brothers brought him to Caesarea and from there they did then to Tarsus, his hometown. At that time the Church lived in peace in Judea, Galilee and Samaria, and grew thanks to the support of the Holy Spirit. (Acts, 9:26 to 9:31.)

Answers to Questions

1. Who was Gamaliel and he said that for the apostles?

Gamaliel was a Pharisee and the lawyer honored by all the people. Here are his words: "Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves about what you will do to these men, because before these days rose Theudas, claiming to be somebody, this is the number of assembled four hundred men, who was slain, and all who obeyed him were dispersed and came to nothing. After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the census and drew away much people after him: he also perished, and all who obeyed him were scattered. And now I say unto you, hand to these men, and let them alone, for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will be overthrown, but if it is of God, ye can not overthrow it, lest that ye may be also found fighting against God. (Acts, 5:33 to 5:39.)

2. Released through the intercession of Gamaliel, and forced to no longer speak in the name of Jesus, the apostles had to conduct?

First, they withdrew from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name. After all day in the temple and at home, they never stopped teaching and preaching Jesus Christ, or not obeyed the orders of the Sanhedrin. (Acts, 5:40 to 5:42.)

3. As the work grew too, the apostles decided to appoint seven men of good reputation to help them. Who were the seven elected by fellow disciples?

The fellows were selected Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch. (Acts 6:2 to 6:6.)

4. By Stephen was arrested and taken to the board chaired by the high priest?

Then the word of God and in Jerusalem multiplied greatly the number of disciples. As for Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people. Out of envy and spite, some men were then bribed to say that he heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. Brought to the council, presented false witnesses who said, This man never stops speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law, because we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered us. (Acts 6:7 to 6:15.)

5. Accused before the council, Stephen defended himself?

Yes. First, he related the story of the Hebrew people from Abraham to Solomon and the persecution suffered the different prophets over the years. Then he said incisively: stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Spirit, so do ye like your fathers. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? They killed those who previously announced the coming of the Righteous, which ye have now become betrayers and murderers, you who received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept. Hearing this, his inquisitors raged in their hearts, but he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked straight at the sky and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God's right, and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. At that point, opponents cried with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and rushed upon him and cast him out of town, stoned him. (Acts 7:1 to 7:59.)
