Family Prayer
|
|
Six year-old
Philip was sad.
While his father
was out working,
their home
environment was
cheerful and
festive. He and
his mother got
along well. They
played together,
did the house
chores, and when
the time came,
he would help
her in the
kitchen
preparing lunch
for his father
and Samuel, his
older brother,
who would arrive
from school,
hungry.
However, his
father always
got home with a
grumpy face
complaining
about everything:
the food was too
|
salty or not
salty enough, he
wanted meat and
not vegetables,
why wasn't there
orange juice
instead of
passion fruit
juice, and so on. |
One day he hit
the table and
complained
loudly:
- Again pasta
with chicken?
And the mother,
shaking, replied:
- Honey, I made
this dish
because you like
it. Would you
prefer a fried
egg?
- I cannot stand
it anymore! I
don't want
anything! - he
replied, getting
up from the
table and
walking to the
bedroom.
The mother and
the children
heard his strong
footsteps to the
bedroom; then he
slammed the door,
making them
tremble.
Holding back
tears, the
mother looked at
the children and
said:
- Let's eat in
peace, guys.
However, nobody
could eat
anymore. They
were upset,
depressed,
thoughtful. The
mother looked at
Samuel and
Philip and
explained:
- My children,
do not be sad
with Dad. He
loves us very
much, but he is
having a tough
time at the
company and that
is why he is so
angry. Pray for
him because
Daddy needs a
lot of help.
The boys agreed,
nodding. However,
the situation
did not change.
The following
week, watching
another scene at
lunchtime and
tired of seeing
their father
come home angry
and fight with
his mother,
Philip stood up
from the table
and went to his
room.
The father,
aggravated
because the boy
left the table
and went to his
room, went after
him. When he
got there he
slowly opened
the door and
peered into the
room. He saw
Philip kneeling
by the bed,
hands clasped
and eyes closed.
He said:
- Dear Jesus,
Daddy is so
tired from
working so hard
on our behalf. I
think we're a
very heavy
burden for him.
I wish I could
help him
|
|
but I'm
still small. So,
I ask you to
help him so that
he feels
relieved
and does
not
suffer
so much.
We love
him very
much but
I think
Dad
doesn't
know
that.
Tell him,
please.
Thank
you. |
On hearing
Philip's words,
the father felt
ashamed. He
wanted to teach
him a lesson for
leaving the
table without
asking
permission, but
now...
Noticing that
his son had
finished the
prayer, the
father saw him
wipe his eyes
and get up. Then
he approached
the boy and said
with tears in
his eyes:
- Son, I did not
know I was
causing you guys
so much hurt...
the family that
I love so much!
The little one
embraced his
father and said
with love:
- Dad, I
understand you.
It is just that
you are the sole
breadwinner in
this house. The
other day you
said we are a
burden to you,
that we spend a
lot. I want to
be able to help
you and I cannot!
Only when I grow
up I'll be able
to work and earn
money!
The father
pressed him
closer to the
heart, repenting
the words he had
said:
- No, my son.
You are not
heavy to me. I
do get angry
with the job I
have. Since I
cannot dump my
anger on my
colleagues and
the boss, I get
home and dump it
on you. I beg
your forgiveness
for making you
suffer. You are
the best son
anyone could
have, believe
me.
Philip,
understanding
his father's
predicament,
advised him:
- Dad, you need
to say a prayer
asking Jesus to
help you at work.
The father
smiled nodding
and agreed:
- It's true,
Philip. I have
forgotten to
pray. When I
entered this
room and saw you
saying a prayer,
I felt a great
well-being. You
can believe it!
You've already
helped me a lot.
Now let's get
back to the
dining room?
Holding hands,
the two returned
to the dining
room where the
table was still
set. The mother
and Samuel
waited silently.
As they saw the
dad come back
smiling and
holding hands
with Philip,
they felt
relieved.
Ashamed, the
father
apologized:
- I would like
you to forgive
me for all the
bad things I
have done in
this house. I
was blind, and
it took Philip
to open my eyes.
I understand now
that it wasn't
my job that made
me angry but the
way I dealt with
my problems.
- What do you
mean, Dad? -
Samuel asked.
- My son, nobody
is to blame for
our problems but
ourselves.
Instead of a
prayer, which
would give me
time to face the
difficulties, I
found it easier
to put the blame
on others! Got
it? However, I
was the one that
needed to change.
The father
embraced his
wife, children
and promised:
- I want to be a
better husband
and father than
I have been. So
when I'm wrong,
please correct
me.
Oh ... and let's
establish a rule:
starting today,
before meals,
let's say a
prayer together.
|
All were happy
finding that
idea excellent.
The father
suggested:
- Now, let's get
back to the
table and begin
the meal again?
Mom will heat up
the food and we
will pray
thanking Jesus
for this day of
blessings.
They sat down
and the father
began to pray:
- Lord, forgive
me for the hurt
that I have
caused to the
family that I
love so much. I
thank you for my
wife and
children who are
the joy of this
home. Help me to
change and to
realize when I'm
wrong. Give us a
good lunchtime
|
and Your peace.
So be it! |
