The Magic Stones

Peter was a boy who lacked nothing. He had a loving family, a devoted mother, an understanding father and brothers who loved him and did everything for his welfare.

However, Peter was always angry. When someone asked him a question, he always answered sullenly. When asking his family for something, he was always demanding, and if they did not do it straight away he would start screaming, angry.

When assisted in his wishes, he never had a word of thanks, as if everyone was obliged to serve him. And when he did something wrong, he was never apologetic.

Peter's behaviour was so difficult that his family members and fellow classmates, fearing his reactions, kept some distance from him.

One day, his grandfather John arrived and found him sad, sitting at the gate.

- What happened, Peter? - asked the grandfather.

The boy lifted his little head to look at his grandpa and said, discouraged:

- I want to play, Grandpa, but nobody wants to play with me! My friends are gone!...

Grandpa John took his grandson to a bench that was in the garden, hugged him and asked again:

- Why is it that your friends have turned away from you, Peter?

- I do not know, Grandpa.

Grandpa John thought for a moment and said:

- Peter, family and friends are priceless treasures that God has given us and which we should take very good care. But I have the solution to your problem.

- Really, Grandpa?

- Yes! In a few days it's your birthday, huh? Well, I'll give you a magical gift!

The boy's eyes shone:

- Magic?… Magic!… What is it?

- You will see. Be patient! Now, let's go inside. I need to talk to your mother.

While his grandfather and mother talked sipping their coffee, Peter's imagination was running like the wind. He was curious to know what would this magic gift that his grandfather would give him be. He tried to figure out, but nothing. The grandfather gave him no clues.

So it was with great anxiety that he watched the days that separated him from his birthday pass. He would be seven years old.

Then the big day arrived. Peter woke up excited. He knew he would get many presents, but he could only think about his grandfather's gift.

His grandfather arrived very early. He carried a beautifully wrapped gift.

After hugging his grandson with immense affection, he explained:

- Peter, here is your magical gift. You should take good care of it. When you need to take action, remember to consult it. It will always have the right answer for your needs. If you do so, it will be useful for the rest of your life.

Eagerly, Peter removed the red ribbon and tore the wrapping paper. He held his breath as he saw a beautiful wooden box. It was, in fact, a safe with lock and key.

Impatient, Peter took the key and opened it. To his surprise, he found some coloured stones, each of which had a different colour

and shape, but were all wonderful: white, pink, blue, lilac. They were bright and polished.

He was delighted. He loved rocks!

Catching one in his hand, he saw that something was engraved.

- It has a word written on it, Grandpa!

- Yes, Peter. You will see that each one has a different but no less important word. They are magic words that will open the door to people's hearts.

- Really? ...

- Yes. You bet!

Full of interest, the boy picked up the first and read: “Thanks”.

At that moment, he realized that he had not yet thanked his grandfather.

- Thanks for the present, Grandpa – he said hugging him.

He continued to examine the contents of the box, watching every stone, and reading:

“Sorry”, “Please”, “Excuse me”, “I like you”, “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” and “Good night”.

Reading each of them, Peter bowed his head, understanding the intent of the grandfather.

The mother, who watched the scene, was moved before the delicacy and creativity of his father. Seeing her, Peter ran to her:

- I know I have behaved very badly, mum. I'm sorry. Thanks for the party that you prepared for me.

The mother hugged the boy with much love.

- Everything I do is because I love you very much, my son.

In the afternoon the guests began to arrive and Peter was at the door to receive them. He thanked everyone's presence with a smile and behaved so well that they all approached him feeling real pleasure in his company.

And when the time came to blow the candles and all present sang Happy Birthday to him, he was sure he would be really happy.

From that day on, Peter kept the safe and its beautiful coloured stones always with him.

Even when he grew up and went to the University, the safe accompanied him, so not to let him forget about how he should treat all people.
