The Goldfish

Eric was tired of staying indoors. He was only six years old but he wanted to go out and play ball with his friends, however he was stuck at home.

It was Saturday and he did not have class. As his mother was busy in the kitchen, the boy stood beside her. Occasionally, he whimpered:

- Mommy, can I play in the backyard?

- No, dear. It's cold outside and you got a sore throat, remember? - replied the mother firmly.

- I just want to play a little, mom! I promise I'll be
back soon!

- It looks like rain and you have to take care of yourself. You don't want to catch a cold and not go to school on Monday, do you?

Eric paused, tired of insisting. Sitting in the living room, he looked at the aquarium where a beautiful goldfish swam serenely.

He moved closer, watching the goldfish, delighted with its movements and saw it pick up some bait food and eat it. However, Eric noticed that the goldfish was not happy. It swam from one side to the other, but did not look happy. Then he asked:

- You are also tired of always being in there, in the same place, aren't you?

The beautiful goldfish stopped and fixed its round

eyes on the boy as he spoke, while air bubbles came out of its mouth. Eric, feeling sad, kept talking with it:

- Yeah, goldfish, I'm also tired of being here at home. I want to walk around and play ball with my friends, but my mom will not let me go out with fear I get sick. Ah! But I so wanted to go out a little bit!...

The fish tilted its little head as if it had understood. Then again let out some bubbles from its mouth, and Eric got happy. To him, the goldfish was responding.

- Ah! You got it! Surely you would also like to go back to the little stream where you came from, right?

Right then Eric had an idea. He and the goldfish could not leave the house, but he could at least walk and if he wanted he could help the goldfish go back for its family! ...

So Eric did not think twice. He dipped a cup in the water and took the goldfish from its bowl. Then he opened the front door quietly and left. He knew his mother would be angry, but he needed to help the goldfish.

On the street the wind was strong and cold. Holding, full of care, the glass with the goldfish, Eric walked around trying to find the creek his father once showed him.

But it was far and Eric did not know how to get there. Besides, he was tired already. The goldfish was moving quite a bit and water was spilling from the glass so the boy said:

- Be patient, goldfish. Soon we will get where your family is and you will be free and will be very happy.

And boy tried to walk faster. Suddenly, he realized he was back near his home. Without noticing, he had walked in a circle.

Right then, he saw his mother coming to meet him, very upset:

- Where have you gone, son? ... I've been looking for you for a long time! ...

Exhausted but relieved to see his mother, the boy explained:

- I wanted to take the goldfish to be with his family, but I could not get to the creek. See how happy he is, Mom! He is jumping for joy!

When he looked at the goldfish, however, Eric noticed that it was motionless at the bottom of the cup.

- What happened, Mom? It was so happy! ...

Taking the child into the house, the mother embraced him fondly, explaining:

- Eric, your goldfish did not resist the walk. It needs water to live, dear. And you, along the way, spilled the water that was in the cup!

- Mom, you mean it is dead?

- Only its little body, honey.
It certainly continues to live in another reality. But now we need to bury it.

Eric cried over losing his friend but his mother reassured stating:

- It will come back to you. We will find it at another store, just as it happened when it came to live with us.

However, the boy blamed himself for having disobeyed his mother:

- If I had not taken it outside the house, nothing would have happened. It'd still be playing in our aquarium. I disobeyed you, Mom, and because of that it died.

- It is true, sweetheart. However, now we can do nothing except give it to God, our Father, giving thanks for the time it was with us. And also trying not to repeat our mistake.

Wiping his tears, the boy thought a moment and replied:

- You're right, Mom. Aaaachoo! ... From now on, I will be more careful with everything I do. I know I was wrong, because you said I should not go outside and I disobeyed you. Besides worsening my sore throat, I still caused the death of my goldfish. But I will not do it anymore. I'm sorry. I learned that when Mommy says something, we must follow it because she knows what she is doing. Aaaachoo! - he sneezed again.

His mother embraced him fondly, nodding. Then she put her hand on his forehead and noticing that he was feverish, she said:

- Now, Eric, straight to bed before that cold gets worse! I'll make you some really good tea. Then we will say a prayer to thank Jesus for you having come back home. Both, prayer and tea, with God's

help, will help you get well soon.
